On Air with Dejeros & Live Units

(ONE WOMAN BANDIT) – Most TV and news outlets are transitioning to using Dejero’s or Live Units. They available via a mobile app or a small box (pictured below). It allows MMJ or multimedia journalists and one man bands to go live at various locations so long as there is a wifi or a cell phone signal. Because of this invention, many stations including my current shop have done away with live trucks.  I have added a quick reference guide to operate the Dejero and a video on how to set it all up below.

GOING LIVE:

Check Live Operation Menu for Default Settings

  1. From the home screen, push the button with the Wrench icon
  2. Push Live button
  1. Check Live Resolution
    • Make sure HD is selected
  2. Check Latency
    • Make sure Short (1.5 Sec) is selected
    • Note: If bad signal, you may have to change
      this setting.
  3. Check Latency Mode
    • Make sure Adaptive is selected
  4. Push Back button to return to main menu
  5. Push Back button to return to home screen

Begin Transmitting: 

Make sure your camera is connected and powered on.

  1. You should see your camera in the preview screen on the
    unit’s home screen.

    • If your camera is not on, audio and video sync issues can occur.
  2. From the home screen, push the top left button with the Play The Dejero unit will begin to transmit and perform some tests.
  3. Once On Air appears on the screen contact Studio Control and verify they can see your signal and complete a microphone check.
    • If you cannot connect or studio control says the quality is not usable, you made need to switch the Latency
      1. From the home screen, push the button with the Wrench icon
      2. Push Live button
      3. Push the Latency button to switch options
        1. Select Medium (3.0 Sec) first and then try to transmit again.
        2. If bad quality still occurs, select Long (8 Sec)
      4. Once you’ve completed your live shot, stop the transmission by pushing the red Stop button (top left button on the home screen) and turn off the unit.

FEEDING BACK VIDEO:

  1. Make sure your camera is connected and powered on. You should see your camera in the preview screen on the unit’s home screen.
    • If your camera is not on, audio and video sync issues can occur.
  2. Switch Latency Delay to Long (8.0 Sec)
    1. From the home screen, push the button with the Wrench icon
    2. Push Live button
    3. Push the Latency button to switch option. Select Long (8.0 Sec)
    4. Push Back button to return to main menu
    5. Push Back button to return to home screen
  3. Begin Transmitting: From the home screen, push the top left button with the Play The Dejero unit will begin to transmit and perform some tests.
  4. Call the assignment desk and let them know that you are ready to send back video.
  5. Once you’ve completed feeding back video, stop the transmission by pushing the red Stop button (top left button on the home screen) and turn off the unit.

TROUBLESHOOTING

INPUTS:

If Using the Old Camera (Big Panasonic P2 Cameras):

Plug in using multiple cables – 1 BNC Cable (Analog Input) & 2 XLRs connected to Y-Cable Connectors (XLR Input)

  1. From the home screen, push the button with the Wrench icon
  2. Push Input button
  1. Push Video Input button
    • Select Analog
  2. Push Audio Input button
    • Select XLR
  3. Push Input Resolution button
    • Select 480i
  4. Push Back button to return to main menu
  5. Push Back button to return to home screen

If Using the New Camera (Little Canon Cameras):
Plug in using single BNC Cable (SDI Input)

  1. From the home screen, push the button with the Wrench icon
  2. Push Input button
  3. Push Video Input button
    • Select SDI
  4. Push Audio Inputbutton
    • Select Embedded
  5. Push Input Resolution button
    • Select 1080i
  6. Push Back button to return to main menu
  7. Push Back button to return to home screen

MODE:

If the Live button is missing or you can’t go live:

  1. From the home screen, push the button with the Wrench icon
  2. Push Operation button
  3. Push Mode button
    • Select Live
  4. Push Back button to return to main menu
  5. Push Back button to return to home screen

If the Dejero won’t connect or says connection isn’t available:

  1. From the home screen, push the button with the Wrench icon
  2. Push Operation button
  3. Push Connection button
    • Select All
  4. Push Back button to return to main menu
